Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has ordered the immediate removal of the officer in charge (secretary) of East Delhi’s DDA Yamuna Sports Complex for negligence in maintenance. LG had visited the sports complex along with officials. During the inspection, the Lieutenant Governor has ordered its renovation within two months.
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said that the complex should develop as a self-sustaining recreational destination for the people of East Delhi besides being a top-class sports arena for the players. He directed to develop and renovate the unused building at the gate of the complex as a club house. Here people living in the surrounding areas will be able to avail the facilities including open air dining, restaurant and entertainment. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, this stadium hosted archery and table tennis competitions.
Local people can organize events
The LG said that developing tentage and food facilities on this open space of about two acres will provide a suitable place for the people of East Delhi to organize community gatherings. Apart from the sports facilities, this part of the complex will be accessible to outside users without disturbing the sports activities in the complex. Both these facilities will provide recreational space to the local people. It will also generate funds for the maintenance and upgradation of the sports complex.
Players will get facilities
LG directed DDA officials to provide world-class sports equipment and facilities in Yamuna Sports Complex. These can be used by top athletes, especially archery players. LG stressed the need to develop a conducive environment for training of international level players in the complex. During the inspection, LG interacted with the players present.
The players expressed their problem regarding accommodation near the complex. LG assured the players that he will personally look into the matter and will resolve it soon. LG has earlier directed DDA officials to enter into an agreement with nearby hotels so that better facilities can be provided to the trainee athletes.
